We see the trope of the complicated first kiss. In many ways, Lily’s story evokes the joys of YA romance novels. Where it really stands out, though, is in its balance of both historical realism and hope, a balance we so rarely see in queer stories. For one, the beautiful and complex writing dares to compete with the prose of some of the best-selling novels published for adult readers. The novel succeeds in many places where I feel that most YA books fail. Set in San Francisco in the 1950s, the novel tells the story of 17-year-old Lily Hu, a Chinese American who begins to question her sexuality after developing a relationship with Kath, a white girl in her class. That changed this month when I picked up Malinda Lo’s novel “Last Night at the Telegraph Club,” which won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 2021. Since then, I’ve tried to reignite my excitement surrounding the genre that inspired me to fall in love with reading, but I haven’t been able to do so since middle school. Throughout seventh and eighth grade, I consumed YA novels as if my life depended on it - at least two a week at my peak. It’s been a while since I exited my young adult literature phase. About the book: It’s 1924 South Carolina and the region is still recovering from the infamous boll weevil infestation that devastated the land and the economy. I'm not a lover of pnr stories, but even I thought that was sweet. Some of the individuals are more likable than others and at least one of the stories was actually quite a sweet love story, drawing on New Orleans voodoo. It makes for a really erotic and intense read. I cannot lie, there is an awful lot of smut in this, and most of it is really well written, with lots of sheet gripping encounters between people who just can't stop getting it. Happily, the reader gets to both sympathize with the many problems the sex addiction throws up while simultaneously enjoying the smut. The common theme in each individual's story was the impact of their sex addiction on their lives - for some it meant they could not be faithful, for others that they were unable to resist indulging in some really outrageous public sex acts because, you know, they are addicted. This was an anthology of stories centering around a group of people who attend a sex addicts support group meeting in modern-day New Orleans. Their stories, wow, left me in shock, but what really surprised me is the way Darren cares about Charlene, the way he protects and cares for her, he had me sighing tirelessly, the way he loves her, so intensely and unconditionally, gahhhhh, he's so PERFECT, he's my new favorite Pucked boy and my new book boyfriend. I finally got all the answers I wanted.īoth characters are deeply wounded, they fight with their demons. I loved the story too much, the characters, the story owned my soul and mind, it consumed me, the author made me addicted to her words from the first pages.ĭarren and Charlene are the most mysterious couple of the whole series, they had me with so many questions, always so mysterious, making hypotheses, and developing theories. I was looking forward to this story because apart from the fact that this is one of my favorite series, it is the final installment of the series, and it far exceeded all my expectations.
